Women focused Tours in India

January 21, 2011 by Rosemary

I have recently come across this great Indian Tour Company Periplus Getaways. There are quite a few women who lead some great tours for women to India, but Periplus is different in that is owned and run by a local Indian woman Nutan Thangan. Like Moksha of Back and Beyond Motorcycle Tours,  Nutan is keen to work with people in other parts of the world to organise tours for women in India.I recently caught up with Nutan and asked her some questions about her work:

Tell me about the Periplus name?

Periplus is a Latin document which maps a sea route – listing the ports, geographical features and other coastal landmarks. The Periplus of the Erythraean Sea was written over 2000 years ago and gives detailed routing of the Erythraean (Red) Sea with important descriptions of coast of India as well. The text is widely regarded as an important source of ancient Indian maritime history and is the inspiration for the name of our company – Periplus Getaways.

What is your interest in women and travel?

As a high-end holiday planner and operator for a decade I loved everything about my job – knowing my beautiful country, visiting exotic places and staying in some of the best and most charming hotels. The impending motherhood made me reluctantly leave my job. Quickly the joy of raising our child took over the regret of giving up on the promising career. Each year 4-5 holidays kept the travel bug in me fully catered to and the quest for exploring the country never stopped….

After our child became relatively independent the need for a career began to overwhelm

Nutan Thangan

once again. However, this time a ‘regular job’ is not what I was looking for; instead of starting afresh, after much deliberation, I decided to make a business of my passion for travel.

As a woman and a mother, I realise how dependent most women are on their husbands’ office schedule for a holiday. Furthermore, there are no companies in India offering the safety and comfort of organised ‘women only’ and ‘women with children’ group travels. Thus I set up Periplus Getaways, a travel company organizing tailor-made family holidays and women only group tours.

Have you travelled much yourself?

I have traveled extensively all over India over the years. Our products are well-researched and I have visited or stayed (more the case) in all the 101 hotels listed on our website. We are rather old-fashioned and insist on devising tailor-made holidays and events after exhaustive discussions on the most-suitable and best available options.

About our company

Our website lists India’s top 101 carefully selected, unique getaways that are located away from the crowded cities, in places of exceptional natural and cultural beauty. These well-researched getaways are variously suited for family holidays, private parties, special occasions like honeymoons and anniversaries, and unusual places for innovative corporate meetings and conferences.

Managed by a team of travel professionals (with a collective experience of decades in organising travel related services), we are headquartered in New Delhi and have representative presence in over 30 cities of India. A 24-hour Emergency Contact and a team to turn to in case of a problem in itself is good enough a ‘reason’ to book your holiday with Periplus Getaways.
