Supporting Girls in Kenya – you can help…

October 6, 2018 by Rosemary

My name is Penny Cooper.  Like you I am a world traveler and I would like to ask for your help today.
Four years ago I lived in Kenya for close to a year, volunteering at a school for girls the entire time I was there. It is a wonderful school that protects young girls from early marriage, early pregnancy, and FGM by keeping them in a boarding school and raising awareness in their community about the importance of educating women.
Upon leaving Kenya, I took it upon myself to sponsor one girl throughout her high school years.  I am going back to Kenya to visit her in October.  I have been asked to speak/instruct at a different high school about menstrual health.
There are 240 students at that school.  I am trying to raise money to donate as many sanitary napkins as possible after this presentation.  $5 buys six months worth of pads for 1 girl!
I want you all to know that I was asked specifically by the principal of the school to not buy reusable pads for the girls because the school has problems providing enough water for them to wash them properly.  I know the idea of reusable pads is a great thing, and I truly wish it would work at this school, but unfortunately, the disposables is what will work best here.
I would like to ask all of you to donate towards this worthy cause.  This is a very taboo issue that is surrounded by many cultural mysteries and misconceptions.   Some people still believe that women are possessed by the devil when they are on their period!
We all know what it was like to be in school when we were young and how distracting our periods could be.
Please help me to provide some supplies and make this one less thing these girls have to worry about on their journey to a better life!  Thank you!!!
