Lisbon as a Solo Woman

December 9, 2016 by Rosemary

When deciding to travel the world, you’ll find most travelling guides to be family or couple oriented. Unfortunately, this leaves a single traveller at a disadvantage. In order to rectify this recurrent mistake, here is a short and simple overview of a place you should visit as a solo female traveller.

Lisbon, the largest and one of the most beautiful cities in Portugal, is one of the best places to visit on your own. Here are a few reasons why.

Prepare for your Voyage to Lisbon as Solo Woman

First of all, you have several ways to get to Lisbon from all over the world, so the choice is yours. Travelling by train is relatively easy in Europe, but you first need to pick the route. The most popular ones are TGV & Sud Express routes and another route, a bit longer, is via Barcelona. Of course, there is always an option of travelling by plane, and depending on the season, where are you coming from and the offer you take, the tickets can sometimes be fairly cheap when booked in advance.

Language is not a Problem

Even though English is an international language, you can’t completely rely on it when travelling abroad. Portugal, however, is an exception to this rule since people there are much more likely to speak English than Spaniards or Italians are. Still, it can come in handy to learn a few phrases in Portuguese just in case. These can be just basic things, like saying hello or learning how to introduce yourself. All in all, it never hurts to know more.

Cheap Accommodation

One of the greatest perks of travelling alone is a fact that you have more choice when it comes to the accommodation. While you can get a single room in virtually any hotel in the city, there are also a lot of people willing to rent out a room. The latter may seem a bit risky, but this way, you can get a fully furnished room in the city centre for as little as €20 per day or €140 for a whole week.

Places to Eat at

When it comes to tasting the local cuisine, there are so many places you can go to. A great example is Cervejaria Ramiro, Intendente also known as the seafood temple. Here, you can taste some of the most authentic and delicious Portuguese dishes. On top of it all, you can also order food or make a reservation online.

Other Places to Visit

At the end of the day, everyone has something different in mind when talking about a perfect holiday. To groups and families, educational tours may seem more enticing while for the young singletons, nightlife usually comes first. This is why it might be worth for you to seek your inspiration for travel before booking your flights.

Going on a holiday alone gives you a lot of freedom and it provides you with a unique opportunity to learn a thing or two about yourself. Travelling in a pack always means making a compromise and agreeing on something you wouldn’t normally do. Luckily, a woman of the 21st century always has an alternative.

Very interesting read – thanks for sharing. Travelling alone can definitely be a great experience and can really help you to grow as a person – having to depend solely on yourself to sought through problems that come along and to enjoy all the simple moments on your own.
