Menorca: The Jewel of the Balearic Islands

January 7, 2014 by Rosemary

MenorcaMenorca holidays are extremely popular, described as the jewel of the Balearic Islands; Menorca is the place to go for superb beaches as well as a taste of culture and history. If booming bars and partying ’til dawn is your thing then neighbouring Ibiza or Majorca will probably suit you better as the nightlife in Menorca has a more relaxed vibe, which is better suited to families and couples.

The warm Mediterranean waters can be explored easily with a whole host of water sports and activities on offer; a popular way to explore the island is by glass-bottom boat, a fun-filled adventure the whole family will enjoy.

Nature is in abundance on the island and a great pastime here is walking and hiking on one of the many trails, either along the coast or across the island which has been classified as a UNESCO biosphere reserve. Look out for local wildlife such as the booted eagle and some beautiful flora and fauna on your travels.

The main resorts in Menorca are Cala’n Porter, Cala’n Blanes, Binibeca, Cala Blanca, Cala’n Bosch, Cala n’Forcat, Es Castell,Playa de Fornells, S’Algar, Son Parc, Son Bou, and Arenal d’en Castell.

Purpose-built resort Cala ‘n Bosch is neatly nestled on the southwest coast. Its beautiful beach is small but perfectly formed; in the shape of a sheltered bay, where calm waters gently meet the white powdery sands, a perfect place for families. In fact the resort is very much geared for families with a fantastic water park and a fun play park which has a bouncy castle, ball pit, trampolines, go-karts and much more, so the little ones will be entertained all holiday! The small marina is a great stop for lunch; enjoy the local cuisine and a cold beer whilst taking in the quaint seaside surroundings.

A great place for couples and older families is Son Bou, a relatively new and purpose built resort on Menorca’s rugged south coast. Boasting a magnificent long stretch of pure white sand this place is a beach lover’s dream, plus there are plenty of beach bars to keep you topped up with cold drinks and snacks! There are two main focal areas to the resort which provide lots of shopping opportunities, bars and restaurants.

Menorca is certainly a safe bet for an enjoyable getaway with its glorious beaches and natural beauty, whether you’re looking for a romantic break or a fun-filled family holiday.
