On 3 March 2014 28 Ladies Trekking Club led a group of women from 8 nationalities on a trek on Kilimanjaro aiming to reach the Roof of Africa in the morning of March 8 – the International Women’s Day.
Our flag with 10,113 women’s names written on it started its way up in a school for Maasai girls. As all the names of the girls were on the flag, we started there to show the flag and tell the girls about our project. Another time we introduced the flag was in the morning of March 3 when all those participating in the trekking trip searched their names on the flag and we took a group photo.
The flag reached the peak at 6:45 AM on 8 March 2014. The wind at the peak was so strong that we were not able to get the flag straight with those few helpers who were at the peak at that time. But the flag was there and with a great effort we were able to fight the wind and take a photo of it. We accomplished our mission despite the freezing temperature and cold wind getting under our skin.
At the moment our flag is travelling in Janika’s (LTC) backpack through Tanzania and telling its story. One day it will find the right wall where it will be waiting for all those who contributed to this project by adding their names.
