Dine with the Locals… Bon Appetour

April 30, 2015 by Rosemary

BonAppetour dining experienceWhere shall we eat tonight?

When I am traveling, one of the things that gets me down is the hundred and one decisions you have to make during the day.  What to eat and where to eat are two that come to mind.

mcdonalds
Surely NOT!

Once I was alone in Barcelona, my first time in Spain.  I was very very tired,  after a long day exploring. I was keen to try local food, but not keen on eating by myself, and trying to navigate my way through a menu I could not understand.

I am embarrassed to say that I went to McDonalds. (It’s not all bad – all McDonalds in Spain have free Wifi by the way!)

Bon Appetour seems to be the answer – a wonderful innovation where travelers and local foodies can get together in Home Restaurants.

I looked up Barcelona, and there are three options – including a lesson in making a Paella or Tapas. All of them more expensive that I would like to pay, but on the other hand, they are a cooking lesson as well, so maybe….

In London and there are much cheaper options.  (by the way the prices are in your default currency, something not that clear on first looking.  When you click on Request Booking, you see more details, including the currency.)

In Christchurch New Zealand where I live there are no options at present, so an opportunity awaits!

Rinita and Inez are the Co-founders of BonAppetour:

While on a backpacking trip in Scotland, we had the rare opportunity to stay in the home of a local resident. Sitting around a table piled high with Scottish fare, casual conversations flowed.

From the exchange of travel experiences to the endless talks about food, it was in that time spent that we truly saw Scotland through the eyes of its people.

From this story woven with others, and then meeting Giovanni, who is the technical person behind the site and now co-founder, Bon Appetour  was born.  The website was officially launched at the end of Sept 2014, but they had been working on the idea since June 2013.

As a host, you’ll get to share your home-cooked dishes, your passion for cooking and culture with guests from all around the globe. As a guest, you’ll get a taste of home away from home, perhaps learn a recipe or two!
