The West Coast of New Zealand

May 11, 2015 by Rosemary

Your base for exploring the South Island of New Zealand is the city of Christchurch.  Although 2011 brought a devasting earthquake to the city, it is up and going, and welcoming visitors.  In fact tours about the earthquake and its consequences are one of the growing trends in the city.

Tranz-AlpineIf you head west from Christchurch, you cross rolling farm country before climbing up into the tussock lands of  Arthurs Pass before climbing down into the verdant forests and wild beaches of the West Coast.  It is one of the great trips in New Zealand, and the best way to do it is on the Trans Alpine Express – one of the truly great train journeys of the world.

You can go over and back in a day – though it is even better to stay and hire a car to explore this amazing area of New Zealand.

There are cycleways, Punakaiki Pancake Rocks, stunning walks and wildlife.

Rosemary of Women Travel recently spent a week exploring by car – read some of the stories about the West Coast of New Zealand HERE

Arriving back home in 2018, I based myself in the stunning Hawke’s Bay region, […]

New Zealand – don’t hire a campervan

A lot of visitors to New Zealand hire a campervan as a great way to get around, but in doing so they are missing out on one of the magic things about New Zealanders – their hospitality. Don’t Miss out on a Taste of Kiwi Hospitality… If you must hire a campervan – my suggestion […]

What is a Bach?

What is a Bach?

A Bach is a peculiarly New Zealand word to describe a rustic holiday home.  It can be in the mountains or by the beach or lake.  It is definitely never in suburbia.  Rosemary is a New Zealander who loves Baches and what they represent Five things you should know about NZ Baches… 1. A Bach […]

Getting around in New Zealand and Australia – instead of a car – try a train or fly

Getting around in New Zealand and Australia – instead of a car – try a train or fly

Many people coming to New Zealand or Australia want to hire a campervan to do their whole trip. My suggestions is think in a more varied way flying between some centres, catching a train or bus, or hiring a small car.  New Zealand suggestions For your international flights – try flying into Auckland and out of […]
